FEMMESHIP!!! Femme/Femme friendships are strong, important and vital to our unity and solidarity, even in the face of expectations that femmes are pitted against one another in fierce competition for everything. Femmes are friends with Femmes, and look at these amazing BFFs!!! So much love.

today’s femmespiration is Joan Nestle, activist, femme, author, poet, founder of the lesbian herstory archives, academic, sex radical, teacher, BABE.

From an interview with

Angeline Acain and Susan Eisenberg in Ripe magazine, 2001 (photography by Kathryn Kirk):

I wouldn’t say one is born fem, but one does have a fem hunger, a fem appetite and needs. It’s amazing how fems find the women to fulfill them. In the sixties, when I was a sophomore at Queens College, I already had one lesbian affair and I was not happy, because I wanted a butch woman. I remember walking on campus and saying, “I’m looking for a butch woman!” (Eisenberg laughs). Well, I found a butch woman on campus but unfortunately she was very disturbed (more laughter from Eisenberg). I remember lying under her and thinking, “Okay Joan this is what you want for the rest of your life.” The irony of this is that now I’m sixty and with a woman who is one of the most powerful women I’ve ever been with, but she does not appear as butch. But desires stay alive in our breasts as we age.

Femmes look out for each other, yo!

you can use this as a stencil. print out the image, glue it onto a piece of plastic or cardboard, use a scalpel or stanley knife to cut out the black areas (dont forget to try and join up any white areas so they stay solid after all the black is cut out), then paint/spray it all over town!

safer spaces policy

this event has adopted a modified safer spaces policy. every event-goer will receive a copy of the safer spaces policy upon entry, and will be asked to confirm that they understand that this represents an agreement between the event-goer and the organisers of the event regarding behaviour on the night.

the safer spaces policy for smBFF has been deployed as a way of trying to ensure that all event-goers are able to enjoy the event in an environment that respects physical, emotional and sexual boundaries, and create a space in which event-goers can feel safe from oppressive and violent behaviour - both physically and verbally.

the initial version of the safer spaces policy will be uploaded to this website as soon as possible, and the organisers of this event are MORE THAN HAPPY to make modifications so that the policy reflects the needs and concerns of event-goers, so contact us if you have any ideas or concerns. xoxo

friday april 1, 2011

9pm - late

[this is mosdef NOT an april fools’ joke. like, at all]

this party is being run as a fundraiser for the Loophole Community Centre in recognition of the amazing work that Loophole does for the queer community in Melbourne. Additionally, some of the proceeds will be going towards a documentary about the multiplicity of femme identities in Melbourne.

this party is one way that we can destabilise the kyriarchy. Capitalism is a major aspect of the way in which the kyriarchy attempts to control us.

WE DONT WANT MONEY TO BE A REASON FOR NOT COMING TO THE PARTY.

as such, we are charging a sliding-scale entry fee. $5 - $10. If the entry fee is still a barrier to coming, please contact us and we can see what we can organise for you. xoxo
